USAGE:

A natural beeswax and carnuba wax blend for use on bare wood or previously sealed surfaces. Can also be used as a maintenance wax.

  • Drying Time (TOUCH) : 1 minute.
  • RECOAT : 15 minutes.

  • Finish : Satin to Gloss-depending on number of coats.

Specification:

  • BAREWOOD - Ensure a clean, dry and dust free surface. Fill if required. Apply One Coat Shellac Sanding Sealer or Cellulose Sanding Sealer, allow to dry, then sand. Apply One Coat of Briwax, allow to dry and burnish with a soft cloth. Apply further coats of Briwax to increase durability and gloss level,(not more than 3 coats recommended).
  • SEALED WOOD - Apply Briwax, allow to dry, then burnish with a soft cloth.
    • NOTES:
      • STAINS- Should always be sealed before using Briwax otherwise they may bleed.
      • GLOSS LEVEL- Maximum Gloss level will be difficult to achieve unless the surface has been previously sealed.

    BRIWAX SHELLAC SANDING SEALER

    USAGE:

    A natural shellac based product, suitable for most types of timber substrates. Particularly used under shellac finishes like French Polishes and an ideal sealer under BRIWAX wax polishes to produce a higher shine.

    • Method Of Application : Polishers Fad, Brush or Conventional Spray.
    • Coverage : 10 sq/m per litre.
    • Drying Time (TOUCH) : 10-15 minute.
    • RECOAT : 30 minutes to 1hour.
    • Shelf Life : 12 months unopened.
    • Flash Point : Below 21 degrees centigrade.
    • Thinners : Thinners 1000/Methylated Spirit*.
    • Finish : Matt
    • V.O.C. Levels : 636gms/litre.
    • H.S.D.S No. : 1013.
    • *The Methylated Spirit may DISCOLOUR the Sanding Sealer if used as a Thinner.

    Specification:

  • BAREWOOD: - Ensure a clean, dry and dust free surface. Fill if required with Briwax Woodgrain Filler, allow to fully dry. Briwax stains can be used underneath the Shellac Sanding Sealer. Apply one coat Shellac Sanding Sealer , allow to dry, then sand with a light abrasive paper. Apply a second coat if required.

    NOTES:

  • The Briwax Spirit Based Stain can be added to the Shellac Sanding Sealer, but only up to a maximum of 20% stain to sealer.

    Directly onto bare or filled timber to enhance the grain. Can be used as a tint in shellac based products, such as French Polishes and Shellac Sanding Sealer . Can also be used to tint oil varnishes. May also be used as a shading or matching stain, in thin films between coat of polishes and varnishes.

     Specification:

    Prepare timber to a standard ready to finish. Apply stain, wiping off excess with a lint free cloth. When dry the stain can be overcoated with Briwax, French and Shellac based polishes.

    NOTES:

    When using the Spirit Dyes under Briwax, French and Shellac based polishes, it is recommended that the Shellac Sanding Sealer should be used. This will prevent the reworking of the Spirit Dyes.

    French Polishes

    USAGE:

    Traditional french polishes are used to obtain an impressive deep gloss and smooth finish on good quality furniture. The BRIWAX polishes are to the same meticulous time proven method that has been used for centuries. They are blended from shellacs, dissolved in industrial methylated spirit or similar alcohols, varying in strength and colour, depending on the polish chosen.

    • Method Of Application : Polishers Fad, Brush or Conventional Spray.
    • Coverage : 10 - 12 square metre per litre.
    • Drying Time (TOUCH) : 10 - 15 minutes.
    • Drying Time (RECOAT) : See Specification.
    • Pack Size : 250ml and 500ml.
    • Shelf Life : 12 months unopened.
    • Thinners : 1000 Thinners.
    • Finish : Gloss.
    • Equipment Cleaner : 1000 Thinners and Methylated Spirits*.
    • Flash Point : 21 degress centigrade.

    NOTE: Although a number of these products give a gloss finish on normal application, the use of rubber to achieve the high gloss associated with French Polish would be recommended and would be essential with "cloudy" products.

    SPECIFICATION:

    Lightly sand timber to an even and smooth surface. Do not use an orbital sander as this will produce minute circular scratches which the polish will emphasise. A 400 grit abrasive paper is adequate. (Apply woodgrain filer if you require the grain to be filled). Allow 24 hours to fully dry. Brwax Spirit based or Water based can be used to achieve an old fashion antique effects on furniture. Briwax manufactured a large range of colours (see colour card) in the water and spirit bases. Allow to fully dry.

    In between coats of frech polish, ensure that the coats are fully dry ( especially when brushing), if not this will result in solvent entrapment which will lead to print marking from the table maps etc.

    It is advisable to apply a thin coat of shellac sanding sealer onto the stained surface to seal in the stain surface. Once dry, lightly sand and apply the french polish.

    HOW TO USE FRENCH POLISHES.
  • Stage 1 - Make up a polishers fad. Take some wadding and wrap it in a lint free cloth until the sole is smooth and free from creases.
  • Stage 2 - Open the fad to reveal the wadding and pour french polish onto the wadding, just enough to soak it. Wrap the wadding up and squeeze the pad until a residue of french polish shows through on the smooth sole.
  • Stage 3 - Dab a small amount of linseed oil onto the pad just to lubricate the surface.
  • Stage 4 - Starting in one corner, with even pressure, work over the surface in over lapping loops until the surface has been completely covered. If the pad starts to drags, refill the wadding as directed in stage 2 and 3.

    Allow the french polish 24 hours to fully dry off. If the polish has raised any wood fibres, lightly go over the surface with the finest flour grade paper to remove the grain fibre. Apply more coats of french polish, if required, taking the utmost care not to damaged the existing french polish applied the day before. In between coats of french polish, ensure that the coats are fully dry (especially when brushing), if not this will result in solvent entrapment which will lead to print marking.

    SPIRITING OFF.

  • This is the last stage in the use of french polishes. Take a new fad and fill with french polish and a little 1000 Thinners or methylated spirits, squeeze the fad until nearly dry. Go over the surface, again starting in a corner, in a figure of eight motion until the surface has been covered.
  • Allow the surface to dry overnight, and burnish the polish to a high gloss finish by using the fad with a small quantity of Thinners 1000 or methylated spirit and going across the surface in straight lines.

    FURHTER INFORMATION: 

  • The use of french polishes should be restricted to items or articles that are for show purposes or items that will not receive severe use. If used on dining or coffee tables, table mats must be used to prevent water and heat marks.
  • It is not advisable to overcoat french polishes with polyurethane varnishes or lacquers, as the adhesion is very poor.

Specification: 

  • Prepare timber to a standard suitable for wood finishing.
  • Shake bottle well, then apply the Water based stain.
  • Allow to dry then lightly sand with Flour paper.
  • Apply sanding sealer appropriate to the finishing system being used.

NOTES:

  • Water based stains cannot be used a matching coat between coats of tint lacquers or varnishes.
  • When using solvent based finishes over the Water based stain ensure that the timber or veneer is thoroughly dry before sealing.
  • This is a non-flammable water based stain with good fade resistance which can be used on most timber or veneers.
  • All colours in the range are intermixable, they can be reduced in strength by addition with water.
  • This stain once dry can be overcoated with water based, more traditional or modern finishing systems.

Cellulose Sanding Sealer

Ceullose Sanding Sealer is a general purpose sanding sealer for use under BRIWAX wax polishes or Cellulose Lacquers. As a Sealing coat directly onto filled, stained or bare wood and veneer.

  • Method Of Application : Conventional or Air Assisted Airless.
  • Coverage : 8 sq/m per litre.(approx).
  • Drying Time (TOUCH) : 5-10 minutes. RECOAT : 20-30 minutes.
  • Shelf Life : 12 months unopened.
  • Flash Point : Below 22 degrees centigrade.(petroleum mixture).
  • Thinners : B1 Thinner/AAA Tinner/E30 Gun Cleaner.
  • Finish : Matt to Slight Sheen.
  • V.O.C Level : 893gms/litre.
  • H.S.D.S No. : 1063.
  • Specification:
  • Prepare timber to a standard suitable for wood finishing.
  • Apply Briwax Wood Grain Filler or Briwax Spirit or Water based stain if required.
  • Apply one coat of sanding sealer.
  • Allow to dry. Sand with 150-222 grit paper.
  • Apply second coat of sanding sealer if required.
  • When dry, apply top coats.

    NOTES:

  • No more than 2 coats should be applied.
  • This sanding sealer can not be used under pre-catalysed or acid catalysed lacquers.

DATA SHEET

Briwax THIXOTROPIC WOOD GRAIN FILLER

USAGE:

For filling grain of solid timber or wood veneer prior to finishing.

METHOD OF APPLICATION: By hand, brush or spray. Rub off across the grain.

  • COVERAGE: N/A
  • DRYING TIME (TOUCH): 1 hour approx.
  • PACK SIZE: 220 g
  • SHELF LIFE 12 months
  • (RECOAT) 1/2 hour minimum
  • FINISH: N/A
  • COLOR RANGE : Transparent (Dries off white), Light Oak, Mahogany, White (can be used as a liming filler)
  • THINNERS: VM&P Naphtha grade.

FURTHER INFORMATION: Thixotropic Wood Grain Filler is a blend of filling and coloring pigments mixed to a heavy, thixotropic paste for ease of application. It is important that the filled surface is dry and sanded before finishing. Thixotropic Wood Grain Filler is suitable for use under nearly all finishing systems.

SPECIFICATION:

  • Prepare timber to a standard suitable for wood finishing.
  • Apply wood grain filler with rag, brush or spray.
  • Rub material across the grain using a course cloth or net.
  • Allow to dry. Finish using desired system.
    • Thixotropic Wood Grain Filler can be stained, after application, when dry and sanded with a colorfast stain before finishing.

 For a limed effect: Use open grained timer (i.e oak) prepare timber in normal way. Wire brush grain to remove fibers etc. Apply white Thixoptropic Wood Grain Filler across the grain with course cloth. Allow to dry. Sand along grain to remove excess. Finish with desired system.
