Mahogany Carved Edge 20's Tilt Top Table
|
This well constructed table is close to being a true antique. Many would consider it an antique now & it really is quite charming, but not as it is. Should it be refinished ? In my opinion, no. But certainly refinished, the table would perform and be pleasing to look at. But, its' original finish would be destroyed along with the charm and patina it has acquired, if you like that sort of thing. |

In the first picture, the table has been wiped down, thoroughly with Briwax Furniture Cleaner. The finish did haze over. It was wiped down again, and wiped clean. Still some hazing left behind & if you look close the finish looks its' worst. In the second picture, the table has been wiped down with Briwax Reviver, cleaned & buffed with a clean cloth. Look close. The imperfections (patina) are still there, but, in my opinion, this finish is acceptable. Some of the heavy scratches could be filled with wax filler, but they don't really bother me. The finish here has been repaired as far as can be practically done. Don't be fooled by the "finish feeder" or "restore finish" routines. No different than old English or any other product which is loose in the can, the fix is only as long as it takes to evaporate off. Some are fast, some are slow. But in less than a couple weeks, with them all, the fix is gone, exclusive of the minute amount of solids in the tin you purchased. Think about it. |

Here the table has been wiped down with Briwax Liquid Glass a couple of times & buffed with a clean cloth. From here maintenance should be with the Briwax Liquid Glass and or Sherdale. These products while acting to enhance the existing finish, leave behind solids which do not evaporate away !! Don't be fooled by feeding and moisturizing the finish. You cannot moisturize the finish with oil. With some finishes, damage eventually will result. If this finish is not acceptable to you, what can one say - a thicker coat of plastic ? As time passes, whoever should own this table will appreciate its' original patina & finish as part of a true antique that has survived time in use & care. |
